In Western New York, addiction is everywhere – from cities to suburbs to rural areas. Medical experts say treatment facilities should be where the patients live.

Debra Smith holds a picture of her son Nathaniel, who became addicted to opioids prescribed for pain from surgery and a car accident. He later turned to heroin and fentanyl and died of an overdose at age 26.
